We have been creating, growing and invigorating brands for over 30 years. We combine strategy and design to get results for our clients.

In this blog we share our thoughts, inspiration and things from behind the scenes at Stills - enjoy!

John Lewis car park signage

John Lewis car park

We’ve recently been working on signage for the new John Lewis and St David’s carparks. And this week our work has been coming to life thanks to some very patient and talented stencillers. It was pretty painstaking stuff because of the detail of some of the brand elements, but the result was well worth it!

Check out more photos on our Flickr page and see more of our work on our website.

Cartier, champers & curlers – fashion shoot at Hayes Apartments

We wanted to share some of the behind the scenes pics from our recent photo shoot for Hayes Apartments.

There was a pretty large team working hard to make the magic happen - a photographer and assistant, hair stylist, make up artist, several stylists plus the eight models, not to mention the clients and the team at Stills. Everyone did a fantastic job to create three different shots in the three different apartments.

All the clothes, shoes and accessories were kindly on loan for the shoot from some of the top labels in Cardiff. A big thank you goes to:

Interiors project wins award!

We’re thrilled to announce that the Winter Rule offices in Truro won the Michelmores Western Morning News Commercial Property Award for Project of the Year under £3million.

Winter Rule building

As well as being tasked with the interiors project, we started right at the beginning with Winter Rule, working with them to develop an effective brand. We’ve ensured this brand is reflected throughout every aspect of the building, as the more detailed interior shots show.

Congratulations and well done to everyone involved!

Click. Connect. Discover.

The newly branded Click. Connect. Discover. website is now live http://www.clickconnectdiscover.org/

Stills got involved in this project right at the start, creating the name, logo and developing the look and feel for Click. Connect. Discover., an initiative set up by the Wales Co-operative Centre to help communities benefit from digital technology.

This brochure we created helps demonstrate why digital skills are so important for those who ordinarily might not have access to the digital services others take for granted such as finding information, accessing government services, staying in touch with people plus all the benefits associated with researching and purchasing products online.

We are really pleased to have been involved in such a worthwhile project, plus it’s a hot topic at the moment with Silver Surfers’ Day on Friday 21 May.

Award winning Cardiff Central Library. Shh!

We feel as though we’ve helped create a little piece of history after working on the interior of the iconic library building at the heart of the recently developed city centre.

Stills created the way finding and signage system that navigates users around the building. The signage is of course bilingual but something less apparent is that the braille has also been translated into Welsh.

In addition, Stills commissioned the artist who was tasked to create a suite of paintings produced onto large acoustic panels that help absorb sound.

As well as having fantastic facilities, the library is also a lovely place to chill out with a paper so it comes as no surprise to us that the building has won of a whole string of awards, the most recent being the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors in Wales Sustainability Award and a 2010 RIBA Award. The list of accolades continues:

  • Project of the Year in the 2009 Constructing Excellence Wales Awards plus winner of the Legacy Award for Sustainability
  • Public Building of the Year in the Cardiff Building Control Constructing Excellence Awards plus winner in the Sustainability category
  • Winner in the Sustainability category of the 2009 Welsh LABC Building Excellence Awards
  • Regional winner for Wales in the 2009 Green Apple Awards for the Built Environment
  • 2009 Building of the Year by BDP Architects (Building Design Partnership)
  • 2009 National Concrete Society Award

Phew! Hope the awards cabinet is big enough!

Photomarathon 2010 - 12 hours, 12 topics, 12 pictures!

The first ever digital Photomarathon took place in Cardiff this weekend. 400 of us met in the Millennium Centre at 10am to be briefed on the simple rules: 12 hours to take 12 pictures on 12 as yet unknown topics. Sound like fun? The first topic set looked like this:

1. My entry number/Giant

2. Aroma

3. On a shoe string

4. Inspiration

We though it was going to be a little easier this year given that the event had gone digital but we were wrong. Being able to see what you’d snapped made the perfectionists among us strive for the perfect shot and just when you thought you had it, a fellow ‘Photomarathonner’ was already in position with the same idea!

By lunchtime however we were progressing well (if a little behind schedule) and it was with optimism that we collected the second set of topics at 2pm:

5. Up in the air

6. Arc

7. Seven

8. Fail

Fail indeed. 6pm came and went and we hadn’t even made a dent in the second set of topics, nevermind being on time to collect the third and final topic set!

9. Old school

10. Contemporary

11. Backwards

12. Identity

But there’s nothing like a bit of pressure to get things moving, plus the fading light on what had been a beautiful day. By 9.30pm (30 minutes ahead of schedule!) we were back at the Millennium Centre handing over our memory cards with our final twelve images.

Exhausted but happy, we’re already looking forward to the event next year, particularly since one of our photos received a commendation from the judges! You can check out all the entries at the exhibition that is running in the The Old Library until 7th August. Take a look at our photos…

How to bid farewell in style

When you send someone off, do it with style. Or with an amazing cake.

We bid farewell to Terri, the guardian and caretaker of Stills’ finances after 20 years of looking after us. It’s also Terri’s 70th birthday, hence the congrats and details on the cake.

Congratulations and we wish you well, Terri!

Showering gifts

Today is the last day for Anna, one of our experts in brand strategy, before she goes onto maternity leave. Last week we surprised her with a good ol’ fashioned baby shower with balloons, cakes, lots of presents and guessing who’s who in a mix of baby pictures of our team.

We wish Anna all the best with Baby Lewis, coming to the world soon!

Anyone for chess?

As part of the St David’s redevelopment, concrete and marble chess tables were commissioned in the area surrounding the Hayes Island Snack Bar and Stills were engaged to produce the chess pieces.

The wooden pieces are branded with St David’s colours and are housed in wooden boxes finished with St David’s branding.

A set of pieces can be hired out for a £10 deposit so maybe we’ll see you there for a game soon. Be warned - we have been practising…
